I came to this work the long way, through archives, regimental histories, and a stack of oral-history transcripts that wouldn't let me sleep. Every book starts the same way: with the paper trail a unit left behind, and the gap between what the reports say and what the men remembered.

The fiction lives in that gap. The history keeps it honest.
